Pommel founder, Georgina Fletcher, has been a horse lover for 30 years. It was when Frankie, her 17.1hh Irish Sports horse, developed Cushing’s disease, it became apparent that there was a shortage of products on the market suitable for his sore, scurfy skin. Frankie is no longer with us, but his legacy lives on in the Pommel ethos – kind, gentle, natural products which actually work.

A high percentage of mass manufactured shampoos and conditioners contain SLS and parabens. We have worked hard to establish equine skincare free of sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS). SLS is a surfactant that is used to trap dirt and create a lather. However, it is a highly synthetic chemical which is known to cause dryness, eczema and in some cases, irritation. It is also produced using palm oil.  We are committed to making shampoos only using ingredients sourced through suppliers who are signed up to the roundtable of sustainable palm oil.

Parabens are a class of chemical widely used as preservatives in the cosmetics and pharmaceutical industries. They can be found in a lot of equine shampoos alongside many human cosmetics. A 2004 Reading university study brought the use of parabens into the limelight as the findings found a strong link between parabens and cancer. This is why our products are paraben free.
